4 Steps to Help Your Water-Fearing Child to Learn Swimming

Although you want your kid to learn how to swim, water phobia prevents that from happening. It can be because of a terrible water event they had as a young child or because they have a strong sense of survival that causes them to avoid water. How can you encourage your water-phobic child to learn how to swim?

You may follow these four steps.

Choosing the right class and coach

You must choose a class with fewer students in order to provide each kid with the required monitoring and care. The coach should be informed in advance if your kid has a fear of water. When your water-averse kid participates in the weekly lessons, the coach will be better able to grasp his or her requirements. Additionally, look for a coach who has expertise working with young students and who is understanding of people who are apprehensive about water.

Edging your child slowly into the water

It is crucial to discuss your child's level of water phobia with the coach before to the first class. It's important to explain to the coach why your kid exhibits such intense fear of the water, as well as any past traumatic experiences your child may have had with it. The first few classes should be planned by the coach with a modest but steady approach to the water. Before entering the water, your child must have confidence in the coach and feel secure near the water. The coach will be better able to assist your child in overcoming his or her phobia of water if you give him or her the opportunity to understand the issue.

Getting into the water with your child

In the first few classes, if your kid is uneasy and has trouble trusting the coach, you could ask the coach if you might join your child in the water to ease their anxiety. If this isn't feasible in a group setting, think about signing up your kid for a one-on-one lesson to begin with so that they may have the coach's full focus. It would also be ideal for you to enter the pool with your kid to boost water safety.

Encouraging your child with every milestone

Scolding your kid for being terrified is the one thing you absolutely must not do. Your child's self-esteem and confidence in learning to swim may suffer if he or she learns that you are unhappy because he or she is fearful. Additionally, your kid may develop a bad link between swim lessons and your temper, which makes it more difficult for them to overcome their fear of the water. Instead, celebrate every milestone—no matter how small—with your kid and provide encouragement. Congratulate the student for a job well done if, after three lessons, they are ready to enter the water. Your child's fear of the water will likely be significantly reduced with such positive reinforcement.

It's critical to be patient with your water-averse child so that he or she feels motivated to continue taking baby steps towards swimming. We are certain that your kid will develop a love of the water and delight in his or her swimming classes as long as you collaborate closely with the swim coach.
